Easter Retouching

Posted by on Apr 23, 2017 in Blog, Photography, Portraits | 0 comments

So I just came back from Photoshop World (which I will tell you guys about in a different post), and I decided to retouch one of my daughter’s pictures from last week’s Easter Egg Hunt. Easter was such a sunny day, and it was so hot and we decided to go hunting around 3pm.

Thanks to some of the workshops I attended at PSW17, I decided to something about the picture and wanted to bring out how fun and bright it felt with Melodie around.

I was able to take some awesome family pictures for my sister-in-law and her family a few weeks back! They are huge Harry Potter fans, and asked me if they could include some of that into the pictures… They decided to have their boys represent their Houses! Rhys was a Hufflepuff, and Seth happened to be a Slytherin. The boys had a blast and they looked awesome in their pictures!

I used a golden reflector for these pictures, as it was 2pm and we were sitting under the trees for some shade. The golden reflector gave them all a very nice color to their faces and made them pop a bit more. I edited these on Lightroom, and then took them to Photoshop for some quick fixes. But the one i obviously spent the longest on was the one of Seth’s Patronus, which happens to be a giraffe… I recently went to Photoshop World and learned how to use brushes and some of the Photoshop features a little better, so for this picture I ended up using the Render option, under the Filter tab, and using the flame effect. It was pretty cool being able to put some of the things I learned to good use!

A few weeks back I was able to take some pictures of my sister-in-law and her family. They are so cute! I loved being able to take pictures of my nephews, and they had a blast dressing up for the shoot! They had decided tat they wanted to incorporate one of their favorite books into the pictures, which happened to be Harry Potter, and the kids had a blast!

For these pictures I used a golden reflector, as it was 2pm and we were sitting under the trees for some shade. The golden reflector gave them all a very nice color to their faces and made the pictures pop a bit more. I finished up by editing these on Lightroom, and then taking them to Photoshop for some quick fixes.

Eastern Idaho Engagement Portraits

Colin & Amber

As you all know, I live in Eastern Idaho, and it’s a gorgeous place to take some engagement portraits! I had the great opportunity of taking the engagement portraits of Colin and Amber, who are getting married in just a month! They are very sweet people, and I loved their engagement story. They met each other through a baseball team, and they got engaged during a game! They were very fun to shoot!

For this shoot, we decided to go to the BYU-Idaho orchards and we took some portraits there late in the evening. We had to use a speedlite because of how dark it was! Here’s a preview of what we did that day!

I really enjoyed taking these engagement portraits and it was so much fun trying to figure out which poses would best fit this couple. As an inspiration and reference on poses, I visited Jessica Calderwood’s website and looked at her beautiful poses.

Personal Style

As a photographer I have always wondered what I liked to shoot. I finally realized that I was intrigued by darker photography. Whether it be about lighting and interesting shadows, to dark fairy tale story montages, to emotional pictures, I love it all.

Lately I have been going through some struggles. I have many things going on through my head. It’s not easy, and it is sometimes difficult for me to figure out what it is that I need at the moment. Sometimes I feel in need of help, sometimes I feel hopeless, other times I feel fearless, alone, at peace, happy, stressed, lost, and confused. There is so much that goes on, and I wanted to show that. These are all pictures of me, and they all show the different parts of me.

I did this in my living room with a snoot on a flash and thought to myself’: “I started out the semester doing a SQUIBB, might as well finish it the same!” I also did very minor editing. I enhanced my eyes in Photoshop, and I took out one little blemish that was bothering me and was very distracting. I left all other imperfections because that was part of what I wanted: I wanted to show my imperfections and how they make me beautiful.

Rexburg Nature Prints

Fine Art Prints in Rexburg, Idaho

I’ve decided to do something for my business and print some of my favorite fine art prints and sell them around Rexburg. I decided to go first to where I work, at Progrexion, because I’ve seen that they buy prints from photographers every once in a while. I did a plan for what to do, and I showed them multiple pictures that they could choose from to print. They really liked my lightpainting pictures, so they asked me more about them, and I told them about some I would be doing this weekend during 4th of July, and said I could print some for them. I will be printing them next week, and will be displaying them at Progrexion, and taking a few of them to some offices around town for sale.

Eastern Idaho Family Portraits

Addams Family

This was an awesome family to photograph! It’s nice to take pictures of little kids, but it’s so much nicer when the models know what you’re talking about! This family was extremely talented, and they all took pictures with their instruments. We used a lot of speed lights and we also used natural lighting. We took these pictures at the BYU-I gardens.

This is such a beautiful family! I loved photographing them. Their kids, Kipper, Brooke, and Paige, were so fun! Kipper wouldn’t stop moving, and Brooke loved modeling for us! We used a lot of speed lights and we also used natural lighting. We took these pictures at the BYU-I gardens.

This little family was too cute! Little Cade is adorable, and he is about to have a sister! Stephanie looks radiant, doesn’t she?! This family was awesome and fun to shoot. We took pictures at the BYU-I gardens and we used speedlites and natural lighting for all of these pictures. They came out great!

Eastern Idaho Fashion Photography: Accessories

What do you think of when you hear fashion photography? Well I hope your answer was Eastern Idaho, because that’s what I was thinking!! Never heard of fashion and Eastern Idaho? Then you’re behind! I’ve grown to realize that there’s all sorts of fashion in Eastern Idaho, and everyone has different styles too! I had a fashion photo shoot with some awesome models at the Sand Dunes in St. Anthony, ID. Here’s a few of the many fashionable people from Rexburg. 🙂

This image was taken with a speedlight! I kept getting good pictures without the speedlight, but once I tried the speedlight in the pictures, it looked a thousand times better!!!

These two pictures are my favorites. I knew from the start that these two would have logos in them because they look like they could be featured in magazines!

This was such an awesome photoshoot! It was fun to be able to spend time taking these awesome pictures. I was able to do this shoot with a lot of awesome classmates. Check out Vanessa Godfrey’s page!

The pictures above were taken with a reflector. We happened to stumble upon an awesome home that had tons of old cars, and we asked the owners if we could take pictures with the cars! How nice of them to let us! The cars were awesome, and they were just what we need for our pictures!

I really like this picture because it has a sort of hazy look to it. This image was shot using a reflector, but her face was looking too golden, so I added a blue filter to the image in certain parts, and her face looks more balanced right now.

Senior At Any Age

Senior Portraits

So this post is a little weird… Why, do you ask? Because of what I did this week! I did Senior Portraits. To say the truth, I’m not sure what Senior portraits are. They look like normal portraits… But for seniors? Ohh well! I had some interesting models (and by interesting, I mean me, my husband, and my grandmother). So I took pictures of my grandmother, because she is an actual senior, and because knowledge comes at any age. Did you know that the oldest person to graduate college was 95 years old? That’s crazy! Anyway, I also decided to take pictures of myself and my husband, since we are graduating soon.

So my grandma may be old, but she looks awesome! She is such a spunky little woman, and that shows in her pictures. We also took some group shots, and unfortunately that did not work! There was a half naked baby running around, and getting in and out of our pictures, and the whole self-timer thing was not working! Overall, it was an awesome experience, though! I wouldn’t mind hiring myself for some portraits again 😉

Now, guys, let me tell you how hard this was! I decided to ask my husband to pose with his car, since he likes cars. It’s always great to show a person’s interests! But I forgot to rent some lighting equipment, so I had my crappy flash, my reflectors, and my led light (aka, my huge flashlight)! It may sound ghetto, but it works! Also, taking pictures of someone is hard enough, imagine taking pictures of yourself!

Creative Cinemagraph Effect

KarlaLugo-StudyingCinemagraph

Creative Cinemagraph Effect

This week I tried to do a creative cinemagraph effect using Photoshop. Did you know Photoshop can edit videos? Isn’t it awesome?! I created this, and it was simple. Cinemagraphs are a combination between a picture and a video, but only one part of the picture moves. The process was very similar to creating a GIF, but you have to mask out the part that you want to move.

I was able to shoot this by myself in my house, and took the video with my Canon Rebel EOS T5.

I tried doing a watercolor effect in Photoshop this week. It’s a cool way to show off your photoshop skills. A lot of cool posters have been done in this fashion, so I decided to try it out. I looked up a few tutorials, and I got a picture from the following page. The picture I used was me in front of some trees near my house, and just used natural light.

Here’s the end result:

Eastern Idaho Outdoor Light Painting Fine Art Print

Posted by on Jun 13, 2015 in Blog, Nature | 0 comments

This week, one of my pictures is being displayed in the Spori building at BYU-Idaho! Yay! Second time it’s happened. Pretty exciting. Anyway, the picture that is being displayed is an outdoor light painting I shot while staying in Eastern Idaho (Victor, Idaho) last month. I am a fan of the original picture, and feel it’s one of my best pictures so far. I am not sure what it is about that picture that captivates me, but there’s something interesting about it that gets me every time. Anyway, I edited in Photoshop (QUITE A BIT) because it was very dark and I needed to brighten the picture for printing. It didn’t retain the feel of the original, but it doesn’t look bad… I changed the brightness, vibrance, dodged and burned, etc., in Photoshop.

Here’s the original:

Hope you all go and take a look at it (right by the front entrance of the Spori) and also take a look at the other wonderful pictures my classmates are displaying.
